Brunch at Home

words by Glyn Andrews

The Art Of A Slow Morning

There’s something rather lovely about brunch. Later than breakfast and more relaxed than lunch, it sits in that little pocket of the day where nobody seems to be watching the clock. Coffee turns into another coffee, plates are passed around the table and a morning together can quite easily drift into the afternoon.

At home, brunch is as much about the setting as it is the food. A table gathered with favourite pieces, something delicious in the middle to share and plenty of coffee creates an occasion without ever feeling too formal. It’s an opportunity to slow things down, invite people in and enjoy the simple pleasure of spending time together.

Start With Coffee

Every good brunch starts with coffee. There’s something comforting about putting it on, choosing a favourite mug and taking those first few moments of the morning slowly, particularly at the weekend when there’s nowhere to rush off to.

Our Wonki Ware mugs feel perfectly at home in these moments. Their handmade character and beautifully imperfect finishes bring personality to the table, especially when different colours and designs are mixed rather than carefully matched. Gather them together on an open shelf or create a relaxed coffee corner in the kitchen, with our Coffee sign adding a playful finishing touch.

Nothing needs to match perfectly. A table made up of pieces you love will always feel more personal.

A Table Made For Lingering

The best brunch tables are the ones that invite you to stay a little longer. Layer different textures, shapes and finishes, allowing everything to come together in a way that feels relaxed and collected rather than carefully arranged.

The Winsford collection makes a beautiful starting point. Its softly sculpted forms, fresh white finish and delicate detailing create a simple backdrop for whatever is being served. Fill a Winsford Pitcher with fresh juice or water, pile fruit generously into a serving bowl and place platters down the centre of the table so everyone can help themselves.

Add pattern here and there with our Helton Botanical Plates, then introduce the warmth of natural wood, handmade ceramics and glassware. It’s the mixture that makes a table interesting — favourite pieces brought together because you love using them.

Something To Share

Brunch is made for sharing. Warm pastries, fresh bread, bowls of fruit and something freshly baked all feel more inviting placed in the middle of the table, ready for everyone to reach for. Generous serving pieces from the Winsford and Abbott collections bring different shapes and textures to the setting, while Wonki Ware adds the character of beautifully imperfect, handmade ceramics. Layer them together rather than matching everything, creating a table that feels relaxed, personal and ready to be enjoyed.

Flowers can be just as informal. A few seasonal stems or branches of greenery gathered loosely in a favourite jug are more than enough. Keep arrangements low, leave plenty of room for food and let the table fill up naturally as everyone settles in. After all, the people sitting around it should always be the centrepiece.

Make Yourself At Home

Perhaps the nicest thing about brunch is that it rarely goes quite to plan. Someone pulls up another chair, another pot of coffee goes on and a morning that was supposed to last an hour somehow becomes most of the day.

The room should feel just as easy. A characterful dining table, a mixture of seating and pieces collected over time create somewhere that feels comfortable and welcoming. Not a dining room waiting patiently for a special occasion, but a space to use every day — for quiet breakfasts, coffee with a friend and those wonderfully full tables when everyone happens to be free.

The Pleasure of Taking Your Time

Brunch gives us a reason to make a little more of an ordinary morning. To use the mugs we love, bring our favourite serving pieces to the table, pick a few flowers and sit together for longer than we normally would.

Because creating a home isn’t only about how it looks. It’s about making a place for the everyday moments that, quite often, turn out to be the ones we remember.

So put the coffee on, bring something delicious to the table and make yourself comfortable. There’s no need to hurry.
